Live-action anime adaptations don’t particularly have a positive record of success. There have been only a handful of spectacular adaptations of popular anime that fans have been able to accept. Otherwise, Attack on Titan and Death Note are examples of movies that haven’t given the audience enough reason to have confidence in future adaptations. That said, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, an ingenious work of art, world-building, story-telling, and diversity, served as an exception to this rule when it got a live-action adaptation.
Franchises of such scale and popularity always carry with them a grand standard that’s almost impossible to meet. The nature of One Piece’s story and animation style makes it an enormous challenge for a live-action adaptation, but surprisingly, Netflix did it. The first season of the series premiered to charting-topping trends and quickly became one of the streaming platform’s most-watched shows, a testament to its quality and appeal. One Piece somewhat washed away the stigma of bad anime adaptations as it opened to mostly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Obviously, a second season is almost always in the pipeline with the success of the first, and One Piece is no exception to that welcoming trend. The series was instantly greenlit for a second season, and fans are dying to know when they can tune into Luffy’s wacky adventures again.
Updated by Alex Roush on October 13, 2024: With Season 2 on the horizon, One Piece fans are eager to see what antics the live-action Straw Hat Crew will get up to next. Season 1 was massively successful, and the second is expected to follow suit. This article has been updated to include even more information on Season 2 of One Piece, enhance the reader experience, and adhere to CBR formatting guidelines.
Will There Be One Piece Season 2?
Season 2 Was Announced Shortly After the Premiere of the First
One Piece opened to chart-topping numbers, and with a whopping 100 published volumes, Netflix won’t be running out of source material, even if it made ten seasons. Naturally, the stakes were really high with the adaptation, considering the enormity of the One Piece anime. The fandom was highly skeptical of how the showrunners would pull off the characters and the unique elements that make the anime tick. The Netflix adaptation captured the joy and the larger-than-life excitement of the anime and opened the anime watchers’ hearts to the idea of seeing Luffy and his Straw Hat pirate crew in the flesh. Despite the initial announcement being made in 2017, it took the show a couple of years before hitting the streaming platform due to COVID-19 delays, which caused production issues. Surprisingly, it only took Netflix a couple of days to announce the second season after the show’s release.
Netflix’s One Piece became the most-watched show in its first week in a whopping 84 countries, leaving behind the likes of Wednesday and Stranger Things. The existing popularity of the anime skyrocketed the live-action’s success, and who better to deliver the good news of renewal to the fans than the man himself? The news for One Piece Season 2 came in September 2023, and Oda himself announced it through the official Netflix YouTube channel. The titular mangaka teased the introduction of other fan-favorite characters who might be dropping in in the upcoming season. It’s safe to say that Season 2 will most likely pick up from where things were left in Season 1, which mostly covered the famous East Blue Saga. The Straw Hat Pirates have a long way to go, and their journey to the Grand Line in Season 1 is just the tip of the iceberg.
When Will One Piece Season 2 Release?
It’s Expected to Arrive on Netflix Sometime in 2025
It took quite a while for the first season to air, but fans are hoping that might not be the case with Season 2. Hopefully, it might take Season 2 less time to come back to the streaming platform despite production delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. It was said back in September 2023 that the writing process for Season 2 was complete, but the writers’ strike halted all production activities, delaying the work from its expected schedule.

An interview with Variety by producer Marty Adelstein confirmed that all scripts for Season 2 are finished, which means that a huge part of pre-production is already done. Also, according to the president of Tomorrow Studios (one of the studios involved with the live-action), the fans would get a potential release date within 12 to 18 months after the strike ended. This means that fans can expect the new season to drop sometime in 2025.
What Can Fans Expect From One Piece Season 2?
Oda Recently Announced Which Arcs Will Be Covered
One Piece Season 1 was all about introducing the main characters to the audience and establishing Luffy’s everlasting thirst for the One Piece. Monkey D. Luffy wanted nothing more than to be the Pirate King ever since the World Government captured Gol D. Roger, and he revealed the secret of the greatest treasure that was hidden in an unknown location. This revelation ushered a new age for the pirates as they set sail to find the One Piece, which would bring unprecedented riches and fame to the one who claimed it. However, among the band of wicked and ferocious-looking pirates, one boy defied all odds and dared to dream about glory without conventional looks and crew. Monkey D. Luffy isn’t a typical pirate because he does not have an intimidating aura or even a crew, for that matter. All he has is a goofy smile, weird abilities, and an infinite excitement source for achieving his dream.

Netflix's One Piece Star Visits Cobra Kai Set in BTS Video
Iñaki Godoy, star of Netflix’s live-action One Piece, crashed the set of Cobra Kai in a new behind-the-scenes video.
Netflix’s One Piece Season 1 was about Luffy exploring the possibility of having a crew, and surprisingly, he managed to recruit people with excellent skills. He finds Zoro and Nami while looking for the map of the Grand Line, and in that attempt, he ends up getting on the nerves of every Marine in the East Blue. Fortunately for Luffy, he does manage to achieve at least one of his dreams by the end of Season 1, and that’s to get his face on the “Wanted Board.” With a monstrous reward of 30,000,000 berries, Luffy becomes the only pirate with the highest bounty in East Blue. This means that Season 2 will probably kick off with the Straw Hat crew being chased by every pirate who wouldn’t want to miss out on the big fat reward on Luffy’s head. After defeating Arlong and his crew in the last season’s finale, Luffy and his mates might go up against a powerful Marine captain named Smoker.
On August 20, 2024, Oda shared a letter on X that gives fans more insight into what to expect in Season 2. In the letter, he shares that the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs will be covered. This came as a surprise to many fans, who were expecting to see the Alabasta arc. Given how vital the Alabasta arc is to the One Piece storyline as well as many individual character arcs, it makes sense Netflix would want to take their time with it.
Who Will Be in the Cast of One Piece Season 2?
Several Characters Will Be Making Their Debut
One Piece fans can expect the core cast from the previous season to return with all their shenanigans and personal contempt for Luffy’s overly zealous attitude and optimism. Of course, actor Inaki Godoy will return as the goofy, stretchy Pirate King-wannabe that everyone loves, along with his most trusted members. Emily Rudd will play the role of Nami, with Taz Skyler as Sanji and Mackenyu as the notorious Pirate Hunter Zoro. Talented sharpshooter Usopp, played by Jacob Romero, will also be joining them. Vice Admiral Garp, played by veteran actor Vincent Regan, and the shy yet courageous Koby, played by Aidan Scott, may also make appearances, though this is still unconfirmed.

Jeff Ward Gave Fans a Sneak Peak at the Set of One Piece Season 2
The Video Dropped on September 18, 2024
In the recently released set tour posted on the Still Watching Netflix YouTube channel, eagle-eyed viewers have been able to pick out several Easter eggs. Many costumes can be seen throughout the video, like Sapi's iconic striped yellow shirt. While some costumes are blurred, visible details allow viewers to guess their owners.
The set tour also included a walk-through of the prop department. Along the way, several prop weapons were obscured to prevent character spoilers, but one notable item discussed was Crocus' syringe, which he uses to give medicine to Laboon. It'll be exciting to see how Clive Russell's Crocus wields the syringe, and how much of Laboon viewers will actually get to see.
Is There a Trailer for One Piece Season 2?
There’s No Trailer, but There Is a Special Message
Unfortunately, the fans haven’t been treated with any sort of promotional material for the upcoming season. The chances of a trailer or even a teaser for Season 2 with such an unclear release window are very slim, but the fandom can expect something to come out towards the end of the year. Besides Oda’s video message announcing the return of Netflix’s One Piece live-action series via the famous Snail Phone, no other video content has been released with new information about the upcoming season.
